S.1018 - Venezuela Humanitarian Assistance and Defense of Democratic Governance Act of 2017
As a U.S. constituent, I am extremely concerned and can't ignore the recent events happening in Venezuela under the current Government. The country is suffering from a humanitarian and health crisis of catastrophic proportions. It is alarming to see how once eradicated diseases, like Malaria and Diphtheria among others, are rapidly spreading again. There is a significant shortage of medications, medical equipment and supplies. Malnutrition is rising, as are the rates of neonatal, maternal and children mortality.
I respectfully ask you to support S.1018 "Venezuela Humanitarian Assistance and Defense of Democratic Governance Act of 2017" introduced by Senator Cardin with original support from Senators Van Hollen, Kaine, Nelson, McCain, Menendez, Cornyn, Durbin, and Rubio at the U. S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. This bill seeks to provide humanitarian assistance for the Venezuelan people, to defend democratic governance in the country, and to combat widespread public corruption in Venezuela. This is a comprehensive bill that covers many of the important issues related to the health and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and provides a unique opportunity for Congress to help with those issues.
The crisis in Venezuela can affect not only the neighboring countries but could have a profound impact on the U.S. economic and security interests in the region. I hope I can count on your support to pass this bill in the U. S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and then in the full Senate.
I truly appreciate your time and attention.
